Montebello

Originally an agricultural community, Montebello bragged of having the ideal climate, productive soil, and an abundance of water. From the turn of the 20th Century, the area was famed for its production of flowers, vegetables, berries and fruits. However, the discovery of oil in 1917 by Standard Oil Company brought about a revolutionary change that has influenced Montebello ever since. The agricultural hills soon became a major contributor to oil production. Today, Montebello is located near the center of the Los Angeles metropolitan complex and is home to many large corporations that consider its abundant freeway and railway access vital to their daily distribution of goods. Bakeries, meat companies, consumer paper distributors, sales organizations, alcohol and soft drink distributors, warehouses, petroleum distributors, and lumber and building materials suppliers all find Montebello’s location near the “hub of the wheel” critical to their operations.

The presence of these companies has served to stabilize the local economy, which has fostered growth in the real estate market, as well as for both retailers in the area and privately-owned companies. Overall, Montebello is a prospering economy filled with moderately young families whose focus is on bettering local schools, government, and the parks and recreations department. Many of the area’s parks have softball and baseball diamonds, soccer and football fields, tennis and basketball courts, and large picnic areas. These facilities have served to enhance the city’s youth, adult and senior athletic programs by providing residents with safe environments in which to compete in a variety of sports that help bring this community together outside of work and school. Additionally, the parks are home to many of the city’s sponsored special events that take place throughout the year in the form of carnivals, fairs, festivals, outdoor concerts, community plays and crafts shows to name a few. Although, Montebello has a large population, the community itself fosters a very family-oriented atmosphere which makes the size of this city seem much smaller than it actually is. Residents here have a strong sense of community spirit and this spirit has helped Montebello bridge diversity gaps while continuing to expand its economic prowess decade after decade.

Popular attractions in the region include Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags Magic Mountain, the famed Sunset Strip and Hollywood Boulevard, professional sports teams such as the Dodgers, Angels, Lakers, Clippers, Kings and Ducks, and some of the most elaborate performance halls outside of New York City such as the Kodak and Pantages Theatres. Freeway access in all directions makes getting to these attractions very easy. Dodger Stadium, the Staples Center and the University of Southern California are less than 20 minutes away while the sun-drenched beaches indigenous to this region are less than an hour’s drive to the west. Combine these recreational amenities with the many amenities that are available in Montebello itself and it is easy to see why this city is considered a gateway to opportunity.
